News Not So Sweet About Sugar In Cereal

Before pouring your child a big bowl of cereal for breakfast, think about this.  The Environmental Working Group came out with a list of the 10 WORST cereals.

#1:  Honey Smacks                                    55% sugar by weight
#2:  Golden Crisp                                       51%
#3:  Froot Loops Marshmallow                   48%

Then descending order:  Cap’n Crunch OOPS! All Berries, Cap’n Crunch Original, Oh’s , Smorz, Apple Jacks, and Froot Loops Original

These top cereals actually have more grams of sugar than a Twinkie!!

BEWARE:  Not all cereal brands are EQUAL:  Original Cheerios has only 3.6% sugar (great choice) while Apple Cinnamon, Chocolate, and Fruity Cheerios have 33%.

Nutrition:  Only 25% of children’s cereal meets the suggested proposed guidelines for nutrition. 10 cereals had more than 210 mg of Sodium and 26 cereals were not predominantly whole grain

The Bottom Line:   Start your child’s day out right with a healthy breakfast with protein and fiber.  That will help their hunger stay away so they can stay focused at school.
