Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly: Dental Anesthesia

NBC News – Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly: Dental Anesthesia

Many of you may have seen the program, Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly, on “The Risks of Dentists Giving Children Sedatives.” The segment ran for approximately 11 minutes.  Interestingly, the President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) was interviewed by the correspondent, BUT none of his part of the interview was even mentioned or aired on Sunday night.

Here is what every parent needs to know about the use of sedation and general anesthesia by a pediatric dentist:

  1. The AAPD has guidelines that are endorsed by the American Academy of     Pediatrics. The benefits and risks of sedation need to be explained thoroughly to parents.
  1. The AAPD supports State Regulations that limits sedation to qualified, appropriately trained dentists.
  1. In our office we use light sedation, laughing gas and Valium. We administer general anesthesia at Methodist Hospital with a trained anesthesiologist.
  1. Sedation can be avoided if parents find a pediatric dentist for their child by the age of one year.  Prevention is the key!
